Behind the scenes: The Book Show on ABC National Radio

Ex-journalists don’t normally make good interviews, because they know the tricks of the trade and tend to be wary, but it’s amazing how a pro can gently pull details out without me being aware they are doing it. I usually only recognize this after the interview is over. Anita Barraud on ABC National Radio’s The Book Show in Australia is in that category: she did a first-rate job peeling my onion and giving her audience a behind the scenes glimpse into my little book.

The urbane producer of A Chef’s Table, Lari Robling, had me into the WHYY’s studios in Philadelphia for a chat about my novel. A Chef’s Table is the hugely informative foodie program aired on NPR stations across the nation, usually on a Saturday. For those who missed it, here’s the relevant A Chef’s Table podcast.

The segment on The Hundred-Foot Journey starts roughly at minute 25 on the hour-long program, which you can jump to by sliding the underlying toggle, but Jim Coleman’s earlier two interviews – on Mediterranean cooking for diabetics and how to prepare tofu – are really very informative. Our country’s beacon of light, National Public Radio, has a website with its own literary pages. The Diane Rehm Show Does Its Magic

At 9.45AM this morning my novel, The Hundred-Foot Journey, was ranked #5,746 in sales among all the books on Amazon.com. At 6.08PM this evening my book officially was among the top 100 books sold by Amazon. Precise tally:

It was an extraordinary experience. I was in particular moved by the depth of the questions, not just from the urbane Roberts, but also from fellow Americans all across the country who called in to ask me questions, and to share their own food and family and cultural experiences. My special thanks to the show’s producer, Nancy Robertson, who plucked me for the show and did all the heavy lifting behind the scenes. A huge radio talent.

The Diane Rehm Show on NPR

The incomparable Diane Rehm Show

I am, as the English say, “chuffed” to be invited on The Diane Rehm Show on WAMU FM 88.5 in Washington DC. For those outside of America, The Diane Rehm Show is one of the jewels of National Public Radio, and it’s a great honor to be a guest on the program to talk about The Hundred-Foot Journey. The show will be live and an hour long, and it includes listeners calling in to ask me questions. Ms. Rehm will be out that day, so I will be interviewed by her stand-in, Steve Roberts. Anyone who has perused Roberts’ bio might understandably come to the conclusion I should be interviewing him. Can’t wait. Should be a hoot.

My appearance on the live show is on July 28th, and is usually around 11.00AM or 12.00PM on local NPR stations around the country. To find a NPR station near you that carries The Diane Rehm Show, click here.
